US 15 / US 501 Widening from North of US 64 Business to Powell Place Lane
Project ID: R5724B
Construction Year: 2025
State: NC Counties: Chatham
Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation
This project's main goal is to improve traffic flow and efficiency on U.S. 15-501, also known as Hillsboro Street. As a key north-south route, this road connects downtown Pittsboro with US 64 and serves as a major travel corridor for people commuting between Chatham, Orange, and Durham counties. Without intervention, future traffic growth will lead to significant congestion and delays. The proposed improvements will increase the road's capacity, ensuring it can handle the traffic volume and maintain an acceptable level of service as a major arterial.
In addition to addressing vehicle congestion, the project will also enhance safety and mobility for everyone using the corridor. The current road lacks proper facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists, who will benefit from the planned improvements. The addition of a dedicated turn lane will also improve safety by reducing the risk of rear-end collisions. These types of crashes are often caused by sudden stops due to traffic slowing down, especially on undivided highways where vehicles waiting to make left turns impede through traffic. The new turn lane will help traffic move more smoothly, making the road safer for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike.
Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
