Improvements to U.S. 220 Business From U.S. 311 Extension to Old Liberty Road
Project ID: U6006
Construction Year: 2028
State: NC Counties: Randolph
Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation
The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing a project to widen U.S. 220 Business (South Main Street) from the U.S. 311 Extension to Caulde Road/Southern Drive. This project also includes improvements to Wesleyan Road and the eastern portion of the U.S. 311 Extension. The main goals of this work are to increase road capacity, reduce congestion, and improve overall mobility, leading to fewer delays for drivers.
A significant focus of the project is to enhance safety for everyone, including drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, and to address existing safety issues. Currently, tractor-trailers have difficulty navigating the tight curves between Wesleyan Road and South Main Street, sometimes tipping over or leaving the road near the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks. In addition, the average crash rates in the project area are higher than the statewide average for similar roads. Many of these crashes are rear-end collisions on South Main Street, where turning vehicles share lanes with through traffic. The project will also improve conditions for pedestrians, who currently lack sidewalks, crosswalks, or pedestrian signals along South Main Street.
Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
