SR 1556 (Wayne Memorial Drive) Improvements from Country Day Road to New Hope Road
Project ID: U6204
Construction Year: 2028
State: NC Counties: Wayne
Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is proposing to improve Wayne Memorial Drive (S.R. 1556) in Goldsboro, North Carolina. This 1.1-mile project stretches from Country Day Road to New Hope Road. The main goal is to improve traffic flow and mobility for everyone who uses the corridor.
The project will convert the unsignalized intersections along the road into reduced conflict intersections. This design helps to improve safety and traffic efficiency. The updated road will feature four 12-foot lanes with a raised median, which will separate opposing traffic. Additionally, the project will include 5-foot-wide bicycle lanes and 5-foot-wide sidewalks on both sides of the road to make it safer for cyclists and pedestrians. To help drivers navigate the new layout, two U-turn areas (or "bulbs") will be added—one just north of Cox Boulevard and another south of New Hope Road.
Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
