I-40 Improvements from NC 55 (Alston Avenue) to NC 147 (Durham Freeway/Triangle Expressway) in Durham
Project ID: I5707
Construction Year: 2025
State: NC Counties: Durham
Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation
The NCDOT project I-5707 is a critical congestion relief effort focused on a short segment of I-40 Westbound in Durham County.1 The primary goal of the project, which spans approximately 2 miles, is to construct a new auxiliary lane connecting the NC 147 (Durham Freeway/Triangle Expressway) entrance ramp to the NC 55 (Alston Avenue) exit ramp 3 This auxiliary lane will lengthen the current "weaving section," which is highly congested due to the volume of vehicles merging onto I-40 and needing to quickly exit, significantly improving traffic flow and safety for the approximately 7,100 vehicles that use this merge daily.4 The work also includes widening two existing westbound bridges and is being coordinated with CSXT and GoTriangle to minimize impacts to rail and transit services.
Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
