Widening US 421 (South Front Street) from US 17 Business/US 76/US 421 (Cape Fear Memorial Bridge) to US 421 (Burnett Boulevard)

Project ID: U5734
Construction Year: 2027
State: NC Counties: New Hanover

Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation

The NCDOT is advancing with a major initiative to improve South Front Street (U.S. 421 Truck Route) in Wilmington, New Hanover County. This vital project will transform the corridor from a two-lane road into a four-lane divided roadway, significantly improving traffic flow and safety for commuters.

A key feature of the upgrade is the conversion of the current intersection at South Front Street, Burnett Boulevard, and Carolina Beach Road into a more efficient double quadrant intersection. The project will also improve pedestrian safety and multi-modal access by adding a new 10-foot-wide multi-use path.

Additionally, a key design alternative is being considered to relocate a portion of the Wilmington Terminal Railroad, which would reduce the number of railroad crossings from two to one, further alleviating congestion and potential safety issues. The NCDOT is carefully designing the project to minimize impacts on the nearby Wilmington Historic District. Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.

Should you be impacted by this project, we can help. If you are a landowner in the footprint of this project and would like assistance with this process or would like more information regarding your rights relative to eminent domain, condemnation, or easements, please contact us today.
