US 74 (Independence Boulevard) Widening from I-277 to West of Idlewild Road

Project ID: U6103
Construction Year: 2029
State: NC Counties: Mecklenburg

Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation

Planning is underway for a major change to Charlotte's U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard). The bus lanes in the median are set to be converted into express lanes. This project aims to improve traffic flow for commuters traveling in and out of the city.

The proposed work will affect about five miles of the existing bus lanes, stretching from I-277 to just west of Idlewild Road. These new express lanes—one in each direction—will give drivers a faster option for their daily commute. Additionally, new access points are planned along the route, including a direct connector ramp between the express lanes and Albemarle Road, making it easier to enter and exit.

This project is a key part of Charlotte's efforts to manage growing traffic and provide more efficient travel options for residents.

Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.

Should you be impacted by this project, we can help. If you are a landowner in the footprint of this project and would like assistance with this process or would like more information regarding your rights relative to eminent domain, condemnation, or easements, please contact us today.
