US 220 Battleground Road Widening from Westridge Road to Cotswold Avenue in Greensboro

Project ID: U5892
Construction Year: 2026
State: NC Counties: Guilford

Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation

A new project aims to improve traffic flow and safety along a 1.5-mile section of U.S. 220 (Battleground Avenue), from just north of Westridge Road to the eastbound I-840 ramps in Greensboro. The plan addresses significant congestion and safety concerns in this busy corridor.

The project will widen the existing roadway to a 6-lane, median-divided road, which will help accommodate the growing traffic volume and improve mobility. To enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility, a 5-foot wide sidewalk will be added to both sides of the street. To improve traffic operations, traditional intersections are planned for New Garden Road, Brassfield Road, and Cotswold Avenue, with additional median breaks at other locations to allow for safer left turns.

The primary goal of this project is to address congestion projected through the year 2040 and improve safety. Current traffic volumes are high, and the corridor's crash rate is significantly higher than the statewide average. The new median-divided road is a key safety feature, as it will reduce potential conflicts between vehicles. This project is a crucial part of the City of Greensboro's Vision Zero strategy and is consistent with the Greensboro Urban Area's long-range transportation plans, ensuring the city's infrastructure can handle future growth.

Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
