The upcoming project along U.S. 321 ALT is designed to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and create a more accessible corridor for drivers and pedestrians in Newton. These upgrades are crucial for managing traffic efficiently and supporting local businesses.
A significant part of the project includes widening U.S. 321 ALT to three lanes. This will feature two 11-foot travel lanes and an 11-foot center turn lane, which will help reduce congestion and provide safer access to businesses and side streets. Additionally, a new 6-foot sidewalk will be constructed on the north side of U.S. 321 ALT, running from Pinewood Road to Duke Street, to create a safer route for pedestrians.
The project also focuses on key improvements to downtown Newton's street network. To enhance safety, Dudley Avenue will be realigned to improve sight distance, which will then allow for the reconstruction of downtown parking for safer access. A new connector road will be built to link Dudley Avenue to Lakeside Avenue, creating an alternative route that can help ease traffic flow. The plan also includes improving several key intersections at Pinewood Road, Dry Ponds Road, Highland Avenue, Park Avenue, and Lakeside Avenue, which will help reduce congestion and improve overall traffic safety.
Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
