I-85 at SR 138/Jonesboro Road Interchange Improvements
Project ID: 0007842
Construction Year: 2028
State: GA Counties: Fulton
Entity: Georgia Department of Transportation
If you've ever been stuck in traffic at the I-85 and SR 138 interchange, you know how frustrating it can be. Well, relief is on the way! The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is set to reconstruct the entire interchange, introducing an innovative solution designed to get you where you need to go more efficiently. The core of this project is a transformation into a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI).
So, what exactly is a DDI? It's a clever and proven design that temporarily shifts traffic to the opposite side of the road as it crosses the interstate bridge. This might sound a little strange, but the key benefit is that it allows vehicles turning left onto the interstate to do so without having to stop or wait for oncoming traffic to pass. Instead of a traditional stoplight for left turns, the DDI uses two phased signals at either end of the bridge to keep traffic moving smoothly.
This new interchange is a perfect fit for the I-85 and SR 138 area, which sees a high volume of left-turning vehicles. In addition to the DDI, the project will also widen SR 138 from Goodson Connector to Lester Road/Miles Terrace and improve operations at six nearby intersections. All of these changes are designed with one goal in mind: to create a safer, less congested, and more efficient commute for everyone. Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
Should you be impacted by this project, we can help. If you are a landowner in the footprint of this project and would like assistance with this process or would like more information regarding your rights relative to eminent domain, condemnation, or easements, please contact us today.
