The North Carolina Department of Transportation intends to widen US 74 (Independence Boulevard) Express Lanes from the Charlotte Outer Loop to West of Idlewild Road. Improvements are being planned and developed for U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard). The project involves widening the roadway to add new express and general-purpose lanes, which will be integrated into the existing express lane network in southeastern Charlotte and Matthews.
The proposed scope of work would widen U.S. 74 from just west of Idlewild Road to I-485. This expansion would provide an additional general-purpose lane, one express lane, and one auxiliary lane in each direction. Once complete, the highway will have a total of three general-purpose lanes per direction. Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
