Widening of NC 65/87 from SR 2371 (County Home Rd) to US 158/US 29 Business (Freeway Dr)

Project ID: R5766
Construction Year: 2033
State: NC Counties: Rockingham

Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation

A key part of the plan is to widen the road to five lanes between the N.C. 65/87 split and Sandy Cross Road/Wentworth Street. For the rest of the corridor, the road will remain two or three lanes, but travel lanes will be widened and paved shoulders added to better accommodate cyclists. To improve safety and traffic flow, the NCDOT also plans to realign and install new traffic signals at the intersections of Rockingham High School driveway/Peach Tree Road and Vance Street Extension/Gibbs Road. Additionally, new sidewalks and a multi-use path will be constructed from Old County Home Road to Peach Tree Road/Wentworth Town Park, providing better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
