I-526 West Corridor Improvements
Project ID: P027507
Construction Year: 2025
State: SC Counties: Berkeley, Charleston
Entity: South Carolina Department of Transportation
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is proposing a major highway improvement project for the I-526 Lowcountry Corridor WEST. The plan aims to relieve traffic congestion on one of the state's busiest interstate segments. The I-526 widening will expand the highway from its current four lanes to eight lanes between Paul Cantrell Boulevard in West Ashley and Virginia Avenue in North Charleston.
This project is a direct response to a critical need for traffic capacity improvements in the Charleston area. According to SCDOT, the stretch of I-526 between I-26 and Virginia Avenue is currently the most congested interstate highway in South Carolina. Furthermore, the remaining section of the project, from I-26 to Paul Cantrell Boulevard, is also a top-ten most congested corridor statewide. In addition to widening the mainline, the project also includes interchange improvements at key locations to further streamline traffic flow and enhance overall road safety. Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
