NC 42 Improvements from SR 1003 (Buffalo Road) to the Wilson County Line

Project ID: U5998
Construction Year: 2027
State: NC Counties: Johnston

Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is proposing a series of improvements along a 10.32-mile stretch of NC 42 in Johnston County, from Buffalo Road to the Wilson County line. The project will address safety and traffic flow at nine different locations.

The planned upgrades include a variety of changes to the road. Two new roundabouts will be constructed, one at Lynch Road and another at Thanksgiving Fire Road. A more complex project at the intersection of NC 222 West, Raper Road, and Old Beulah Road will involve a roundabout, realignment, and the addition of turn lanes and medians.

Several other locations will see improvements designed to enhance safety. Turn lanes will be added at Creech Church Road and Glendale Road. At the Creech Church Road site, the northern section will be removed entirely due to a history of fatal accidents. Additionally, NCDOT will replace a culvert at Little Buffalo Creek and extend two culverts at Long Branch Creek. To prevent vehicles from running off the road, guardrails and shoulder widening will be added at multiple locations, including west of NC 96.

The entire construction project is expected to take approximately three years to complete.

Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
