Improvements to Oakwoods Road (SR 1001) from US 421 to NC 268 (East Main Street)

Project ID: R5772
Construction Year: 2027
State: NC Counties: Wilkes

Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation

The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is working on Project R-5772 to improve Oakwoods Road (SR 1001) in Wilkesboro, from US 421 to NC 268. The project's goal is to enhance safety and traffic flow along this busy corridor. While earlier plans considered widening the road to four lanes, public feedback led to a revised design that will not include full-scale widening. The updated plan focuses on targeted improvements, such as building two roundabouts, adding sidewalks and bike lanes between US 421 and Call Street, and creating a shared-use path from Call Street to Sunset Drive. Additionally, the project will remove the intersection of Oakwoods Road and Stratford Road to improve safety.

Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.

Should you be impacted by this project, we can help. If you are a landowner in the footprint of this project and would like assistance with this process or would like more information regarding your rights relative to eminent domain, condemnation, or easements, please contact us today.
