SR 40 Widening From East of St Marys River Tributary to East of CR 66/Colerain Rd
Project ID: 0000820
Construction Year: 2026
State: GA Counties: Camden, Charlton
Entity: Geogria Department of Transportation
Georgia's State Route (SR) 40 is a key east-west route in the southeastern part of the state. It runs from Folkston in the west to Kingsland and St. Marys in the east, where it connects with Interstate 95.
As a designated hurricane evacuation route, SR 40 has been chosen for a major widening project under the Governor's Road Improvement Program (GRIP). The project will transform the 29-mile stretch of SR 40 from the eastern side of Folkston (at the intersection with SR 40 Connector/Indian Trail/US 301 Connector) all the way to the I-95 interchange at Exit 6 in Camden County.
Most of the corridor will be widened to four lanes with a 4-foot flush median. The project also includes widening an 11.47-mile section of SR 40, from milepost 5.21 in Charlton County to Colerain Road (County Route 66) at milepost 10.12 in Camden County. Additionally, five box culvert bridges will be lengthened as part of the improvements.
Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
