NC 274 (Union Road) Improvements from Osceola Street to Niblick Drive
Project ID: U5961
Construction Year: 2026
State: NC Counties: Gaston
Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation
In Gastonia, N.C., a significant road improvement project is underway to enhance safety and traffic flow on N.C. 274 (Union Road). The plan involves widening a 1.12-mile section from Osceola Street to Niblick Drive to create four 12-foot lanes, separated by a 17.5-foot raised grass median. These changes are designed to improve traffic mobility and create a safer environment for everyone on the road.
Beyond widening the roadway, the project includes several other key upgrades. A 10-foot multi-use path will be added to the west side of Union Road, providing a safe space for cyclists and pedestrians. On the east side, a 5-foot sidewalk will be installed. The plan also incorporates right-in/right-out turning movements at Walls Street and includes median U-turns and "bulbouts" along various sections to streamline traffic. Additionally, a new traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of N.C. 274 and the realigned Osceola Street/Forest Drive to help manage traffic flow more efficiently. The multi-use path was chosen for its cost-effectiveness and minimal need for right-of-way, while still providing excellent service for pedestrians and cyclists.
Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
