East Durham Rail Safety Project

Project ID: P5706
Construction Year: 2026
State: NC Counties: Durham

Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation

The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and Norfolk Southern are partnering on a new project to enhance safety and improve the railroad line in East Durham. Known as the East Durham Railroad Safety Project, this initiative will straighten 2.4 miles of the rail line and close several at-grade crossings. The goal is to create a safer environment for both drivers and pedestrians in the area.

This major project involves building new bridges to carry traffic on Glover Road and Ellis Road over the railroad tracks. The existing Wren Road crossing will also be closed, with traffic rerouted to the new Glover Road bridge. These changes will significantly alter local traffic patterns during and after construction. While these safety improvements are crucial, residents should be aware of the impact this project will have on the community, including detours and construction.

The NCDOT has allocated over $9.3 million to compensate property owners affected by the changes. A total of 39 properties are in the project's path, and some will be fully acquired. This includes land along Glover Road and Ellis Road needed to accommodate the new bridges and modified travel lanes. If you are a property owner in the project area, understanding your rights to fair compensation is essential.

Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.

Should you be impacted by this project, we can help. If you are a landowner in the footprint of this project and would like assistance with this process or would like more information regarding your rights relative to eminent domain, condemnation, or easements, please contact us today.
