US 321 ALT Improvements from SR 1109 (Pinewood Road) to SR 1106 (Duke Street)
Project ID: U6034
Construction Year: 2026
State: NC Counties: Caldwell
Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation
A new road project is underway to enhance safety and improve traffic flow along U.S. 321 ALT in Newton. The main goal is to create a more efficient and accessible corridor for both drivers and pedestrians.
The existing roadway will be widened to three lanes, including two 11-foot travel lanes and an 11-foot center turn lane. This change will make it easier to access businesses and side streets, helping to reduce congestion. Additionally, a new 6-foot sidewalk will be constructed on the north side of U.S. 321 ALT, running from Pinewood Road to Duke Street, making it safer for people to walk in the area.
The project also focuses on key improvements to downtown Newton's street network. To enhance safety and convenience, Dudley Avenue will be realigned, which will improve visibility for drivers and allow for the redesign of downtown parking. A new connector road will also be built, linking Dudley Avenue to Lakeside Avenue to provide an alternative route and help ease traffic congestion. Finally, several key intersections—including those at Pinewood Road, Dry Ponds Road, Highland Avenue, Park Avenue, and Lakeside Avenue—will be improved to enhance safety and traffic flow throughout the area.
Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
