Funding for a preliminary engineering and environmental study has been secured to begin the process of widening Highway 181 to four lanes. The project will run from Highway 104 down to County Road 32 in east Fairhope. The Eastern Shore Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) recently added the $1.7 million study to its Long Range Transportation Plan.

Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
