Graham-Hopedale Road Improvements from West Hanover Road to Morningside Drive in Burlington

Project ID: U6014
Construction Year: 2026
State: NC Counties: Alamance

Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is proposing a significant upgrade to Graham-Hopedale Road in Burlington, Alamance County. The plan, known as Project U-6014, involves widening the road from two lanes to four lanes, with a median divider, between Hanover Road and Morningside Drive. This project also includes new facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. The primary goal is to alleviate traffic congestion and prepare for future growth in the area. A 2019-2040 Traffic Forecast was conducted to confirm the need for these improvements.

The need for this project is largely due to the road's role as a vital connection between the cities of Graham and Burlington, and its function as a main route to U.S. 70. According to Mike Nunn, Burlington's Director of Transportation, the road has become increasingly congested in recent years due to both its heavy use as a commuter route and the increase in residential and retail development. Major businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter and a Wendy's, have contributed to the traffic growth along the corridor.

Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
