Welsey Chapel Stouts Road Railroad Crossing Grade Separation (Bridge)
Project ID: P5744
Construction Year: 2026
State: NC Counties: Union
Entity: North Carolina Department of Transportation
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is proposing to replace the current railroad crossing at Wesley Chapel Stouts Road with a bridge. This new overpass will create a grade separation, meaning the road will go over the railroad tracks instead of crossing them at the same level. This section of the railroad is a crucial part of an intermodal corridor that connects the Port of Wilmington to a freight terminal in Charlotte.
The new bridge will significantly improve both roadway and railroad operations. For drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, it will eliminate the need to wait for trains, ensuring a safe and always-open crossing for an estimated 20,500 vehicles daily, including emergency responders. This will enhance overall safety and traffic flow. For the railroad, the overpass will improve safety and allow for more efficient use of the second track, which is currently used as a passing lane for trains traveling in opposite directions. Additionally, the planned location of the bridge is designed to accommodate a separate, future project that will widen Wesley Chapel Stouts Road to a four-lane divided roadway.
Work for this project will include the acquisition of new right of way and a variety of easements imposed on adjacent landowners through the eminent domain process.
